Joyce Elaine Curtis, age 71, of rural Wolcottville, died on Saturday, July 20, 2013 at home.
Mrs. Curtis was born in Bronson, Michigan on August 8, 1941 to the late Orval H Coney and Loretta Marie (Rumsey) Coney.
She graduated from Kendallville High School in 1959 and in 1979 earned a Master’s of Education degree from St. Francis College in Fort Wayne. Joyce taught first and second grades at Topeka Elementary School for 28 years at Westview School Corporation before retiring. She married Donald James Curtis on January 23, 1960 at St. Mary’s of the Angels Catholic Church near Hudson. Joyce enjoyed reading and collecting books, especially cook books. She loved gardening and tending to her flowers. She especially loved spending time with her family and attending her grandchildren’s sporting events. She was a member of the St. Gaspar Catholic Church in Rome City where she was active in the past as a lector and member of the rosary sodality. She also was a past member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority and the Athena Women's Club.
Survivors include: Her husband of 53 years, Donald James Curtis of Wolcottville. Daughter, Christine “Tina” and Kevin Konrath of Sylvan Lake, Rome City. Daughter, Caroline “Susy” and David Reynolds of Woodruff. Son, Trent Allen Curtis of Woodruff Road, Wolcottville.
Daughter, Catherine “Cathy” and Mike Lutz of Frisco, Texas. Six grandchildren: Justin and Alison Reynolds of Fort Wayne; Jackie Reynolds of Fort Wayne; Beth and Andy Desmonds of Fort Wayne; Michael Dinehart of Fayetteville, West Virginia; Ashley Konrath of Sylvan Lake, Thomas James Curtis of Woodruff Road. Two great-grandchildren: Maryjane and Silas Reynolds. Four stepgrandchildren: Jon, Ryan, Derek and Kiley Lutz all from Frisco, Texas. Sister, Brenda and Paul Trowbridge of Westfield.
Sister, Marsha and Mark Shumaker of LaGrange. Brother, Bruce and Norlinda Coney of Butler. Sister-in-law, Becky Coney of LaGrange. Aunt, Dorothy Mae Riley of Fort Wayne. Aunt, Cleo Carter of Bronson, Michigan. Sister-in-law, Dorothy Ann Fritz of Fort Wayne. Brother-in-law, Gary and Jill Curtis of Angola. Brother-in-law, Ronald Burtch of Kendallville. Sister-in-law, Lucy and Paul Cumston of Hendersonville, North Carolina.
She was also preceded in death by her brother, Larry Coney and sister, Connie Burtch.
Visitation will be Wednesday, July 24, 2013 from 2:00-7:00pm at Hite Funeral Home in Kendallville. There will be a rosary service at 7:00pm.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, July 25, 2013 at 11:00am at St. Gaspar del Bufalo Catholic Church, 10871 N. State Road 9, Rome City. Fr. Bernard Ramenaden will celebrate the mass. Visitation is also before the service at the church at 10:15am.
Burial will be at Woodruff Cemetery in LaGrange County.
Preferred memorials may be made to masses for Joyce at St. Gaspar’s Catholic Church or to the American Cancer Society
Casketbearers will be Kevin Konrath, David Reynolds, Michael Lutz, Justin Reynolds, Andy Desmonds, and Michael Dinehart.
