John Champion

 

John A. Champion, 88, LaGrange, formerly of Bronson, Mich., died Sunday, February 17, 2013 at Parkview LaGrange Hospital.

    He was born July 16, 1924, in Hillsdale, Mich., to William and Bessie (Wendorf) Champion.

    He was a WWII veteran, serving in the U.S. Army. He drove a semi truck for many years, first for Commercial Carriers in Coldwater, Mich., and later for Dallas and Mavis Trucking in Benton Harbor, Mich. He was a police officer in Bronson, Mich., for a short time, then spent many years with the Bronson City Street Department, retiring as superintendent.  After his retirement he kept busy working part time at the Kolcz Funeral Home.  He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Bronson, Mich., the Bronson American Legion and the former VFW.

    He was married August 14, 1945 in Hillsdale, Mich., to B. Joyce Bidwell. She preceded him in death on September 8, 2002.

    Surviving are one daughter, Connie (Wayne Bieberich) Good, LaGrange;  two grandchildren, Amy (Richard) Shields, LaGrange, and Jill (Steve) Warner, Cassopolis, Mich.; four great-grandchildren, Kaylee, Brayton, Hunter and Kennedy; five brothers, Arthur Champion, Ft. Myers, Fla., William (Marge) Champion, Battle Creek, Mich., Richard (Mary) Champion, Jackson, Mich., LeRoy Champion, Wyoming, and Lester Champion, Litchfield, Mich.; three sisters, Helen Morris, Battle Creek, Mich., Verna Cooper, Litchfield, Mich., and Ruth (Lyle) Rodgers, Coldwater, Mich.; and many nieces and nephews.

    He was preceded in death by three brothers, Donald, Leonard and Harvey Champion.

    Visitation is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, February 21, at Dutcher-Kolcz Funeral Home in Bronson, Mich.

    Services will be 11 a.m. Friday, February 22, at Dutcher-Kolcz Funeral Home in Bronson, Mich., with Pastor Terry Siler officiating.

    Burial with military honors by the Bronson American Legion Drill Team will be in Matteson Cemetery.

    Memorials may be directed to Parkview Home Health and Hospice – Noble County or the Bronson American Legion.
