James D. Yurs, 81, Shipshewana, formerly of Howe, died Monday, December 5, 2011 at Sturgis Hospital.
He was born April 27, 1930, in Elgin, Ill., to Donald L. and Juanita C. Yurs.
Raised on a farm operated by his parents, he and his wife owned and operated several motels in Colorado, Michigan and Indiana. He moved from Three Rivers, Mich., to this area in 1986. He was a member of the Lima Presbyterian Church and a former member of the Howe Lions Club, Colorado and Michigan Hotel/Motel associations, Chamber of Commerce, and Elks Club of Three Rivers.
He was married September 20, 1952, in Elgin, Ill., to Barbara A Boe. She survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Jennifer J. (Michael) Snyder, Sturgis, Mich.; two sons, Jeffery James (Donna) Yurs, Elgin, Ill., and Jay Donald Yurs, Roscoe, Ill.; five grandchildren, Justin and Jenna Yurs, Elgin, Ill., Katie Snyder (Bret) Hamlin, Sturgis, Mich., James J. and Kayla D. Yurs, Roscoe, Ill.; one great-grandchild, Addison; three sisters, Donna (William) Rees, Joanne Burnidge, and Joyce McNutt, all of Elgin, Ill.; and two brothers-in-law, Robert G. (Lillian) Boe, Durango, Colo., and George W. Boe III, Pearland, Texas.
Visitation is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, December 8, at Frurip-May Funeral Home in LaGrange.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday, December 9, at Frurip-May Funeral Home in LaGrange with Reverend Daniel Engber and Elder Jerry Stanner officiating.
Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Howe.
