James S. Cummings, 88, Howe, died Friday, March 15, 2013 at the Center for Hospice Care in Elkhart.
He was born August 23, 1924, in Sturgis, Mich., to Frank A. and Mary E. (Smith) Cummings.
Moving back to the area in 1983 after he retired as the traffic department manager from Illinois Bell, he was a WWII veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy, a longtime Boy Scout leader, and a member of Meridian Sun Lodge F&AM #76 of LaGrange, Scottish Rite Valley of Ft. Wayne, Mizpah Shrine of Ft. Wayne, LaGrange County Shrine Club, and LaGrange American Legion Post 215.
He was married April 30, 1983 to Lou Ann (Terry) Schmidt. She survives.
Also surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Abigail and Michael Koppel, Buffalo Grove, Ill.; two stepdaughters, Beverly (David) Nelson, Howe, and Virginia (Chris) Warble, LaGrange; two stepsons, Daniel Schmidt, Byron Center, Mich., and David Schmidt, Howe; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Todd Cummings.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Monday, March 18, at Frurip-May Funeral Home in LaGrange with a Masonic Service at 7:30 p.m.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 19, at Frurip-May Funeral Home in LaGrange with Reverend Carldean Merrifield officiating.
Burial with military rites by LaGrange American Legion Post 215 will be in Greenwood Cemetery, LaGrange.
Memorials may be contributed to the Shriner’s Hospital for Crippled Children.
