Infant killed in crash


A Monday afternoon crash on SR 120 near Shipshewana left a 7 ½ month old dead and three family members injured.

According to the LaGrange County Sheriff’s Department, a Freightliner semi-tractor was eastbound on SR 120 near CR 675W. The driver, Jerry R. Hendricks, Bronson, Mich., was passing a buggy that was also eastbound, when the buggy turned into the path of the truck for an unknown reason. The buggy collided with the back portion of the semi trailer.

The occupants of the buggy were ejected from the buggy.

The driver, Eva Schlabach,  and one passenger, Nichole Schlabach, 3, were both airlifted from the scene to Ft. Wayne Parkview Hosptial and treated for minor injuries. A third passenger, Darla Schlabach, 4, was taken to Parkview LaGrange Hospital for injuries.

A fourth passenger, Jaedon Schlabach, 7 ½ months, was pronounced dead at the scene after sustaining injuries to the head.

According to the report, no charges have been filed at this time, but the incident is still under investigation.

Assisting the Sheriff’s Department and the Indiana State Police at the scene were the Shipshewana Police Department, Shipshewana Fire Department, LaGrange County EMS, and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
