Herbert Haskins

Herbert L. Haskins, 96, Sturgis, Mich., died Sunday, July 17, 2016 at Thurston Woods Village.

    He was born April 2, 1920, in Springfield Twp., LaGrange County, to Louis and Minnie (Keller) Haskins.

    He attended Mongo High School, served in the U.S. Navy, and was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps. He moved from Ft. Wayne, Ind., to Burr Oak, Mich., in 1947 and to Sturgis in 1989. He was a farmer, worked at Formed Tubes for 32½ years, and retired from Rood Industries in 1982. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Sturgis.

    He was married November 14, 1945, in Angola, Ind., to Margaret Robbins. She preceded him in death March 16, 1989.

    Surviving are two daughters, Evelyn (Steve) Wolf and Edith (Dave) Stuart, both of Sturgis, Mich.; four grandchildren, Christopher (Jessica) Stuart, New Hudson, Mich., Carrie (James) Degitz, Sturgis, Mich., Melissa (Shane) Shidler, Edwardsburg, Mich., and Matthew (Becky) Wolf, Pewaukee, Wisc.; 10 great-grandchildren, Lauren, Evan, and Colin Stuart, all of Hew Hudson, Mich., Ava and Oliver Stewart and Stella Degitz, all of Sturgis, Mich., Naylee and Ryla Shidler, both of Edwardsburg, Mich., and Brady and Austin Wolf, both of Pewaukee, Wisc.; and several nieces and nephews.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, one great-grandson, Wesley Wolf, one brother, Fred Haskins, three half-brothers, Edmond, Bill, and Dick Huss, and two half-sisters, Florence Juday and Bessie Haskins.

    Funeral service was held Thursday, July 21, at Rosenberg Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes in Sturgis, Mich., with Reverend Bob Keim officiating.

    Burial is in Oak Lawn Cemetery.
