Hannah Siegel wins national medal

Hannah Siegel, daughter of Kenneth and Sabrina Siegel and a junior at Prairie Heights High School, won a national silver medal in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards (SAWA) competition. When Siegel first found out about her award, she said “I was stunned to find out, but when it finally hit me I was ecstatic!”

Siegel’s poem “Monster” was one of 200 pieces selected for national recognition from a field of thousands of regional gold key winners. The poem’s inspiration came from Hannah’s emotions. Siegel uses writing as a therapy, not only to heal her “real raw emotions” but also the emotions of others.

The SAWA National Medal Ceremony is slated for May 31, 2012 at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Siegel is “very excited to be going to Carnegie Hall. It has always been a dream of mine to go to New York City.”

National Aaward recipients from the Ft. Wayne region were honored at a reception on March 15 at the Ft. Wayne Museum of Art.
