Habitat helps with renewal project

A Brush with Kindness (ABWK), part of the Neighborhood Renewal Initiative of LaGrange County Habitat for Humanity (LCHFH), completed its sixth project in mid-October.

Jim and Mary Thomas, who live on a channel at Fish Lake, partnered with LCHFH to install an electric heat pump for their home.  “It’s a great program,” according to Jim.  “All our payments are applied to the principal of the (no-interest) loan.”

“We moved here from Davenport, Iowa, 16 years ago,” Mary commented. “I wanted to live closer to my mother and my siblings.”

“LaGrange County is a great place.  We learned about ABWK from our church, LaGrange United Methodist,” Jim added.  “Everyone here is so nice.”

This winter should be a warm one for the Thomas family. Jim and Mary’s son and their three grandchildren also live in the home along with four dogs.

“Our propane heating system was installed eight years ago, but it wasn’t working correctly. The church checked out the thermostat and decided that the unit was too big and wasted energy,” according to Jim. “This time, our heat will be electrical, saving a lot of money over propane, at $2 per gallon.”
