Lakeland competed at the Goshen Invitational wrestling meet this past Saturday, bringing home three runner-up ribbons from the annual mat show.
Cole Long, Nathan Hippenhammer and Brock Bergman were the Lakers who finished second in their weight divisions. Long advanced to the finals of the 120-pound flight with pins of East Noble’s Tanner Reed (0:49) and Whitko’s Jake Rothgeb (4:39). Long was then pinned by Forrest Glogouski of Fairfield in the title bout at 1:34.
Hippenhammer pinned Cody McClure of Columbia City (2:00) to reach the 182-pound decider. The Laker then lost to Evan Smith of Goshen by a pin in a time of 3:01.
Bergman advanced to the 285-pound finale by pinning both Jose Montanez of Goshen (5:26) and Jacob Landis of Fairfield (1:09). Bergman was a 7-5 victim of Columbia City’s Kohltin Hoeppner in the title match.
Two Lakers – Lukas Long and Nick Attkisson – finished third in their respective groups. Long, who came into the tournament undefeated, lost an 11-10 decision to Hunter Langeloh of Columbia City in the semifinals of the 106-pound flight. Long rebounded to beat Ben Streeter of Fort Wayne North (3-1) and Jaron Katzer of Goshen (10-3).
After being pinned by Tyson Whitner of Fort Wayne North in the semifinal round, Attkisson came back to best Fairfield’s Austin Turner (13-9) and Goshen’s Miguel Navarro (10-3) to take third in the 160-pound bracket.
Goshen, powered by six individual champions, easily won the team title with a score of 262 points. Columbia City was second with 223. Lakeland was sixth with 132.
