Goshen boys upends Westview

Goshen scored the first nine points of the game, then held off a rallying Westview squad, 49-43 in a non-conference varsity boys basketball last Friday night in Emma.

After the Redskins’ opening salvo, the Warriors spent the next 16 minutes chipping away at the difference. They finally caught and passed Goshen, 20-19 early in the third period.

But Goshen quickly responded by netting 15 of the next 21 points to take a 34-26 margin into the final frame. Westview sliced the margin to as low as four after that, but clutch free throw shooting by the Redskins squelched their comeback.

Sam Stegelmann canned 14 points to pace the 12-6 Redskins. Jesse Good was next with 12.

Kyle Miller and Chandler Aspy topped the Westview scoring column with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Friday’s result snapped Westview’s 14-game winning streak and left them with a 17-2 record.

The Warriors did receive good news Saturday. West Noble’s 37-35 loss to Angola gave them the NECC regular-season championship. Coach Rob Yoder’s club can cap a perfect league slate Tuesday night with a win at home over Fremont.
