Girls NECC Tourney results

Westview rode the dynamic inside-outside tandem of Maria McCoy and Brooke Yoder to a 56-29 victory at Hamilton in the quarterfinals of the NECC girls basketball tournament Wednesday night.

McCoy, a 6-1 freshman, dominated the lane for the Lady Warriors, scoring 19 points, grabbing 13 rebounds and blocking two shots. The rookie center tallied all but two of Westview’s 12 points in the third period, which ended with the visitors holding a 45-19 edge.

Yoder did all of her damage in the first half. The 5-4 junior guard nailed a pair of three-point shots during a 16-0 Lady Warrior salvo to open the contest. She then canned a couple more triples in the second quarter to help Westview build a 33-13 halftime cushion.

“Getting off to a good start was a main focus for us tonight and the girls did a good job of that at both ends of the floor,” stated Lady Warrior skipper Randy Yoder. “Brooke hitting those threes really helped open things up and Maria showed a lot of toughness on the boards and finishing shots.”

Amber Roth chipped in seven points for Westview (9-5). She and Yoder also garnered four assists and three rebounds. Kristen Duff came off the bench to add six markers and five boards to the Lady Warrior ledger.

“We are excited for the opportunity to play in the semifinals, whoever the opponent is,” the Westview coach added.

That foe will be West Noble (11-4), which went to Brushy Prairie Wednesday night and downed host Prairie Heights, 56-49. It was the seventh straight victory for the Lady Chargers, who will host Westview in the semifinals.

Prairie Heights, which dropped a 60-38 decision last month to West Noble, came out firing Wednesday. A couple of three-pointers by Rebekah Frey and Tressa Terry, and another by McKenzie Kain, helped the Lady Panthers claim a 31-24 halftime advantage.

But that momentum would not carry over into the second half. West Noble, behind eight points by Kelsie Peterson, forged a 19-4 surge in the third period that put the visitors ahead, 43-35. The Lady Chargers then tallied the initial seven points of the final frame to put the game out of reach.

Peterson finished with 18 points to lead all scorers. Teammate Haley Richardson knocked down 14 markers.

Terry and Shawna Carbone each scored 13 points to pace the 7-7 Lady Panthers. Carbone also snared 10 rebounds. Kayla Feeney logged eight assists.

Angola (12-2) and Fairfield (9-4) will meet in the other semifinal game Friday at Benton. The winner of that game will play the survivor of the Westview-West Noble tussle for the championship Saturday night (6 p.m.) at Westview

Prairie Heights bested county rival Lakeland, 58-30 in first-round action Tuesday night.
