Prairie Heights rolled into the semifinal round of the 2014 NECC girls basketball tournament with a 67-57 victory over Churubusco Wednesday night in Turtle Town.

Opposing the 7-7 Lady Panthers in one of the semifinal matchups slated for Friday night will be Fairfield, which took out Lakeland (53-31) in first-round action Tuesday evening and Westview (43-29) in Wednesday’s quarterfinals. Heights and Fairfield will square off at Westview with tip-off at 6 p.m.

The other semifinal battle will take place Friday at Eastside between Fremont (9-5) and West Noble (9-5). The winners of Friday’s semifinal games will play for the tournament title Saturday at West Noble. Tip-off is 6 p.m.

Coach Jennifer Holden’s Lady Panthers, who fell to the same Lady Eagle club, 58-50 back in December, led at the three period stops by counts of 16-13, 31-27 and 44-39. Heights then used a 23-18 spurt in the fourth quarter to nail down its seventh triumph of the season.

Shawna Carbone paced a trio of Lady Panthers in double figures with 19 points. Haley Kleeberg notched 17 markers and McKenzie Kain sank 15.

Carbone and Kleeberg helped Prairie Heights achieve control of the backboards by grabbing 16 and nine rebounds, respectively. Tressa Terry topped the assist chart with seven.

What was a nip-and-tuck battle between the two tourney favorites turned in the Lady Falcons’ direction late in the third period. Three-point baskets by Alexis Zook and Jenna Kieper capped off a 10-0 run that broke a 25-25 deadlock and earned the hosts a 35-25 advantage. The Lady Warriors wouldn’t get closer than six the rest of the way.

“This was a very disappointing performance,” said Westview head coach Randy Yoder, whose club suffered just its third loss in 13 outings. “We did not execute on offense at all. Fairfield is a good defensive team, but not that good. There was too much dribbling and one-on-one play.”

Zook and Katie Yates each knocked down 10 points to spearhead the Lady Falcon attack. Kieper finished with eight.

Maria McCoy racked up 12 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots for Westview before fouling out in the fourth quarter. Sidney Byrkett chipped in five assists.

Haley Brown, a 6-0 senior center, poured in 20 points to lead the host Lady Falcons to victory. Fairfield held a 12-7 edge after one period, gradually building margins of 23-13 and 40-24 by the next two quarter breaks.

Kieper was next on the Lady Falcon scorecard with 10 markers.

Abi Thompson and Ashtin Kaminer each sank eight points for Lakeland (5-10). Thompson also grabbed three rebounds.
