Gerald B. “Garry” Hammer, 62, Wolcottville, died in the line of duty Friday, January 31, 2014.
He was born June 22, 1951, in Ft. Wayne, Ind., to Kenneth J. and Virginia E. (Rinehold) Hammer.
Moving from Ft. Wayne, Ind., to LaGrange County in 1975, he was a critical care paramedic with LaGrange, Noble and DeKalb County EMS for 39 years. He was also a deputy coroner and a SWAT medic for LaGrange and Noble counties, a primary instructor for EMS, and was on the District #3 Task Force for Homeland Security serving with the search and rescue dogs. He served on the EMS Education Board for the State of Indiana and on the Critical Incident Debriefing Team.
He was married September 16, 1972, in Fort Wayne, Ind., to Pamela K. Roach. She survives.
Also surviving are three daughters and two sons-in-law, Janae and Gregory Dull, Waterloo, Joni and Brian Humbarger, Auburn, and Jenny Hammer and her fiancé Ian Molen, Rome City; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jeremy and Joy Hammer, Waterloo, and Joshua and Janet Hammer, Auburn; 12 grandchildren; two sisters, Janice Ellis, Parker City, Ind., and Cheryl and Steven Petty, Monroe, Mich.; and his search and rescue dog, Aeros.
Visitation is 2-8 p.m. Monday, February 3, at the LaGrange Church of God and 9-10 a.m. Tuesday, February 4, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Angola, Ind.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, February 4, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Angola, Ind., with Father Fred Pasche officiating.
Burial will be in Woodruff Cemetery, rural Wolcottville.
