Garrett Boys Defeat Prairie Heights

Despite playing without its top returning player for much of the contest, the young and inexperienced Prairie Heights boys basketball squad gave host Garrett all it wanted before falling to the Railroaders in its season opener, 63-51 Saturday night.

Ryan Day, a 6-1 senior, crumpled to the floor after a drive through the lane early in the second quarter, the victim of a severely sprained left ankle. Garrett took advantage of Day’s absence to build a 13-point halftime cushion (38-25).

“We got off to a horrible start, missing shots, committing turnovers and having Ryan (Day) go down,” said Heights coach Brett Eltzroth. “But I knew our guys wouldn’t quit. This group may be inexperienced, but one thing they do is play to the final horn.”

The Panthers began to chip away at the Railroader lead behind the brilliant play of Jacob Heller. The 6-3 freshman, who would finish his varsity debut with 25 points, netted nine of those markers at the start of the third period to bring Heights within five (42-37).

“Jacob attacked the basket well and hit some shots from the outside,” Eltzroth said of his prize rookie. “He is a very unselfish, coachable kid who is only going to get better with experience.”

Prairie Heights had several chances to whittle the Garrett lead even more in the final stages of the third stanza, but misses on three consecutive front-ends of one-and-one bonus free throw opportunities kept the visitors from doing so. The Railroaders then scored the final five points of the frame to take a 47-37 edge into the fourth quarter.

“Those shots will fall eventually,” said Eltzroth. “I was just very proud of the way our kids fought back.”

Connor Meehan fired in 19 points and Drake Landes swished 18 to lead the Garrett attack. Brandon Porter pitched in 10.

Landon Wohlers and Woody Riha each had eight points to follow Heller on the Panther scoresheet.
