Fremont beats Prairied Heights for Sectional victory

Fremont threw a defensive net over Prairie Heights scoring leaders Tressa Terry and Tianna Terry, and ultimately a wet blanket on the Lady Panther sectional championship dreams Saturday night at Westview.

Utilizing a “triangle-and-two” zone defense which kept a defender on the Terrys where ever they went on the offensive end of the court, Fremont held the Heights leaders to a combined 17 points in a 51-42 title-clinching victory. The crown is the first for the Lady Eagle program in nine seasons.

“Fremont did a nice job defensively and made scoring tough for us,” said Prairie Heights coach Kevin Frey. “The girls did the best they could, but our shots just wouldn’t fall.”

The Lady Eagles also hurt Prairie Heights on the offensive boards, grabbing 11 in all. The three biggest caroms in the tilt came at the end of the third period and at the start of the fourth, when Kayla Teegarden converted two and Liz Carlson turned another into three-point plays, extending the Lady Eagle lead to 41-30.

“We just gave them way too many chances on the offensive end,” cited Frey. “Our defense would make them miss, but we couldn’t get the rebound. That had been (defensive rebounding) a strength of ours throughout the season.”

Carlson finished with 15 points, nine rebounds and four steals to pace Fremont. Kaitlin Kobelak chipped in 11 markers and four assists.

Tressa Terry shook free from the Lady Eagle defense enough to net 14 points, tying her with Shawna Carbone for team scoring honors. Twelve of Terry’s markers came on a quartet of three-point hoops.

“I can’t praise our girls, especially our seniors (Tianna Terry, Logan Penick, Emily Dunne and Taryn Terry), for their efforts this year,” said Frey of his 2011-12 squad that finished 14-8. “We received a lot of positive comments from opposing coaches, fans and game officials about the way our girls played and conducted themselves on the court.”

Fremont (15-9) advances to the 2A regional at Rochester this Saturday where it will meet defending state champion Fort Wayne Luers (18-5) in the second semifinal game. The 10 a.m. opener pits Bowman Academy (18-6) against Winamac (18-5).
