Freemont drubs Westview

Fremont clinched its first NECC boys basketball regular-season championship in two decades Tuesday night with a 54-37 drubbing of the visiting Westview Warriors.

The Eagles, who last shared a league crown in the 1991-92 campaign, finished this year’s conference loop with a 9-1 record after starting out 0-1 with a loss to Lakeland (50-44) in the second week of the season. Tuesday’s result also gave Fremont its 15th overall win, the most for the Eagles in 16 seasons.

Westview has to settle for second place with an 8-2 league mark. The Warriors won their first seven NECC decisions before dropping two of their last three.

Fremont began pulling away from Westview in the second quarter after forging a 15-13 lead in the opening stanza. Jake Bryant, who finished atop the Eagle scoring chart with 15 points, netted five in the second frame to help the hosts build a 26-18 halftime cushion.

A three-pointer by Jordyn Bontrager and two free throws by Adrian Brandenberger was all the Warriors could muster offensively in the third period, as they watched their deficit increase to 12 (35-23). Fremont then sealed its win by swishing 11 of 13 free throw tries in the fourth quarter.

Tyler Jenkins followed Bryant on the Eagle ledger with 14 points. Austin Corcimiglia added 10.

Nic Raber had 11 points and five rebounds to pace the Westview stat sheet. Kyle Miller delivered nine points and Judah Zickafoose five boards.
