Frederick J. “Fred” Clay, 82, LaGrange, formerly of Orland, died Friday, July 12, 2013 at Parkview LaGrange Hospital.
He was born December 22, 1930, in Fremont, Ind., to Nihl M. and Catherine Arlene (Pierson) Clay.
He attended Fremont schools and later entered the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War. After serving his country, he worked for 42 years at Kirsch Company in Sturgis, Mich., retiring in 1985. He and his wife moved from Orland to LaGrange in 1984. He was a member of the LaGrange United Methodist Church and a former member of the Orland American Legion. He was married March 28, 1953, in Fremont United Methodist Church, to Helen N. Wooster. She survives.
Also surviving are four daughters and three sons-in-law, Kathy and Ken Stroh, Bronson, Mich., Teresa and Robert Stauffer, Mohrsville, Penn., Penny Johnston, Sturgis, Mich., and Sandra and Rick Adams, Granger, Ind.; one son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Dawn Clay, Sturgis, Mich., 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary C. Hoyer, Angola, Ind., and his faithful dog, “Skippy.”
He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Karen Lee Clay.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 16, at Beams Funeral Home in Fremont, Ind., with Reverend Chris Danielson and Reverend Dexter Garman officiating.
Burial is in Greenlawn Cemetery, Orland, Ind.
