Fred J. Fender, 83, died Tuesday, October 8, 2013.
He was born January 9, 1930, in Gary, Ind., to Nicholas and Mildred (Hoffbauer) Fender.
He retired from the Industrial Engineering Department of Gary U.S. Steel. He was a former member of St. Mark's Church in Gary, Ind., and St. Bridget's Church in Hobart, Ind., and most recently a member of St. Mary of the Angels Church on Big Long Lake. He was a 1948 graduate of Lew Wallace High School in Gary, Ind., attended Indiana University, and served in the National Guard 113th Engineers. He was president of the Crosstrailers Square Dance Club in Lake Station for four years and a member for 10 years. He was also a member of Magic Square Dance Club in Angola, Ind., and past member of the DeKalb County Amateur Radio Club.
He was married in 1959 to Louise Churilla. She preceded him in death on August 22, 2013.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary Beth (Nick) Hazeldine, Mojacar, Spain, and Susan (Hal) Beas, Berea, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mildred Turnak.
Visitation is 10 a.m.-noon Monday, October 14, at St Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Angola.
Mass of Christian Burial will be noon Monday, October 14, at St Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Angola with Father Fred Pasche officiating.
Burial will be 11 a.m. CST Tuesday, October 15, at Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville, Ind.
Johnson Funeral Home in Hudson, Ind., is in charge of arrangements.
