Four legs, a lick and a wag

Dear friends,

Wiggles and wags to Carneys for donating some carpet for the kids section of the Paws and Claws Bookstore. Wiggles and wags to Elma for making some kerchiefs for my friends at the bookstore. I love it when people help out, makes me feel all warm and toasty inside. Stop by the bookstore and check them out, just in time for Valentine’s Day!

If you have been following the column you know last week I lost my special green sweater in the woods. Guess what! I found it. It was hooked on a piece of fence because I went where I was not supposed to go and when I ducked under the fence, it caught. I am really glad as it was a special green sweater that came from Lansing, Mich., with three special letters on it. Whew!

My mom told me this weekend that former President Bush’s dog Barney passed away. Here is what President Bush said about his faithful friend.

"Laura and I are sad to announce that our Scottish terrier, Barney, has passed away. The little fellow had been suffering from lymphoma and after 12½ years of life, his body could not fight off the illness," said Bush in a statement. "Barney and I enjoyed the outdoors. He loved to accompany me when I fished for bass at the ranch. He was a fierce armadillo hunter. At Camp David, his favorite activity was chasing golf balls on the chipping green."

Bush went on, "Barney guarded the South Lawn entrance of the White House as if he were a Secret Service agent. He wandered the halls of the West Wing looking for treats from his many friends. He starred in Barney Cam and gave the American people Christmas tours of the White House. Barney greeted Queens, Heads of State, and Prime Ministers. He was always polite and never jumped in their laps."

He concluded, "Barney was by my side during our eight years in the White House. He never discussed politics and was always a faithful friend. Laura and I will miss our pal."

February is a special month for several reasons. The 14th is a special day set aside to show someone how much you love and care for them. I think it is for people mostly, but I don’t know why dogs and cats can’t get in on the day, too. Maybe you should think about giving your forever friend something special on Valentine’s Day. A special hug, bone, toy, extra time on your lap, or maybe just a nice tap on the head.

On Valentine’s Day and the day after at Super Valu in LaGrange will be an opportunity for you to help the Ark Animal Sanctuary as well as take a flower home to someone you loves. Ark volunteers will be stationed at Super Valu to answer your questions about the sanctuary and Paws and Claws Bookstore as well to ask you to partner with Ark. All the acrylic dog houses will be on display for you to toss in your extra change as well. See you soon.
