Former Howe School band and chorus director honored

 

The premier performance of a concerto by Major Howard Terrell, music director at Howe Military School from 1970-1986, will be held in Japan this spring. The soloist will be Mr. Ito, a renowned Japanese violinist. A program of his works will also be held in All Saints Chapel on The Howe School campus May 18.

Major Terrell has had a long and storied career in music, guided, he admits, by his faith and his religious ardor. He has composed many classical pieces including overtures, string quartets, five symphonies, and an oratorio. Many of his works have been performed in Northern Indiana.

In 1940 as a young man just out of high school, Major Terrell enlisted in the U.S. Army and served throughout World War II. Following the war, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps as a musician in the Air Force band. He also served as a musician and director of various bands at Air Force installations until his retirement in 1961.

He joined the Howe Military School faculty as band and chorus director in 1970. He also continued his work as a composer. While at the school, he composed five marches for the band. When he retired from the school in 1986, he devoted his time to composing band and orchestra pieces. In 1987, he completed an oratorio entitled Sing a New Song based on the life of Christ. This modern oratorio has been critically acclaimed for its power and poignancy and has been performed several times in Indiana. Its debut was performed by two professional choruses at The Howe School’s Bouton Auditorium in June 2011.

On May 18, Major Terrell will present an early Memorial Day tribute to those who served. He is featuring one poem he wrote, “No Senseless Death,” to be read by Col. Douglass in between the performance of two string quartets he composed, “Kennedy” and “Epitaph.” The music will be performed by Horizon Strings from Ann Arbor, Mich. The program begins at 4 p.m. and will run less than one hour at All Saints Chapel. All alumni and guests are invited to attend.
