A neighbor who noticed smoke in his house around 11:20 p.m. Tuesday evening quickly discovered that the neighboring feed mill on Union St. in Wolcottville was on fire.
An officer from the Wolcottville Police Department who was nearby also noticed the smoke and was on the scene within minutes and Johnson Township firefighters arrived shortly after that. Soon, a total of eight fire departments would be on scene fighting the blaze that eventually destroyed the 160 year-old, 80 ft. tall feed mill.
Along with Johnson Township firefighters, crews from Topeka, LaGrange, Howe, Stroh, Albion, Kendallville and Rome City worked to contain the fire and protect surrounding homes. The fire was under control around 2 a.m. Wednesday morning.
The building and its contents were completely destroyed.
No cause had been determined and the fire remains under investigation. No injuries or other damage were reported.
