The Topeka Fire Department was dispatched to 8285W 600S for a barn fire Monday evening shortly after 9 p.m.
Crews arrived to find the barn fully engulfed in flames. Additional crews from the Shipshewana, Ligonier and Millersburg Clinton fire departments were called in to assist.
A total of 57 firefighters battled the high winds that spread the fire to a shop and one of the homes on the property. Initial reports said that damage to the shop and home was contained to the attic areas, but later investigation showed heavier damage had been done to the home than initially believed.
Firefighters were able to spare three other barns and another home on the property.
The barn was a total loss.
Crews were on scene until nearly 2:30 a.m.
Assisting at the scene was the Topeka Fire Auxiliary, Topeka Police Department and LaGrange County Sheriff’s Department.
