On May 21 a CenturyLink fiber optic cable was cut at CR 900W and CR 250N in Newbury Township near Shipshewana.
The damage was caused by an excavator doing work in the area.
It was originally thought the damage was isolated to just one spot. However, after many hours of restoration crews realized it was damaged in numerous spots. CenturyLink then decided to directional bore in a new 450 ft. section of fiber to ensure all damage locations were bypassed. This took additional time and required the use of a master contractor and specialized equipment.
Service was completely restored by 3 p.m. on May 22.
A remote pair gain unit and several businesses in that area were affected.
