For a while last Friday night at Hubert Cline Field, it looked as though the home opener for the 2012 Prairie Heights football team was going to be a memorable one.
Touchdown runs of three yards by Bobby Blum and of 39 yards by Quinten Bland had the Panther fans roaring, as they watched their squad jump to a 14-3 lead over Fairfield. Even after the Falcons cut the difference to four on a late touchdown pass from Garrett Scott to Brett Baumgartner, hopes remained high that the Panthers would be able to score their first win over the Falcons in nine years.
But it was not to be.
Scott’s five-yard touchdown scamper early in the third quarter put the visitors ahead, 17-14. Later in the frame, Scott hit Caleb Noble with a 37-yard scoring strike to extend the Falcon lead to nine. The Fairfield defense took it from there, holding Prairie Heights scoreless in the second half to preserve a 23-14 victory.
Cameron Kitson rushed for 108 yards and Scott for 84 to spearhead the Falcon offense. Scott also completed six aerials for 81 yards.
Blum finished with 103 yards on 20 rushing attempts for the Panthers.
Prairie Heights dropped to 0-2 with the loss. The Panthers travel to Churubusco this Friday.
