Fairfield boys rips Lakeland

Fairfield sent the Lakeland varsity boys basketball team down to its third defeat of the 2012-13 campaign Tuesday night in LaGrange by a count of 56-36.

A 20-4 run by the Falcons in the second quarter turned what had been a slim, one-point lead (11-10) for the visitors into a commanding, 31-14 halftime cushion. Garrett Scott stoked the surge with nine points. Both he a John Stack buried triples during the period.

Buckets by Daemyn Priestley and Spencer Mortola accounted for the lone Lakeland markers in the second quarter.

“We just have to find a way to put the ball in the basket,” said Laker head coach Ryan Yoder, whose squad has scored 30, 35 and 36 points in their first three contests. “We need to be more patient on offense and take care of the ball. Until we do those things, we are going to keep scoring in the 30’s.”

Fairfield built its lead to as many as 22 points (38-16) early in the second half before a mini Laker comeback, sparked by a pair of three-pointers by Mortola and one by Mitch Herber, narrowed the gap to 14 (42-28) early in the fourth period. But the rally was little consolation for Yoder.

“Playing hard through the entire game is what you’re supposed to do,” said the Laker skipper. “We need guys to step up when the game is still in the balance.”

Brad Lantz, the Falcons’ 6-5 center, powered his way to 13 points in pacing the winners. Scott and Marcus Rodes each chipped in a dozen tallies to the Fairfield ledger.

Mortola finished with 14 points and Herber 13 to lead the Lakers.
