Elkhart Christian and Prairie Heights split a varsity baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Brushy Prairie.
The Panthers, who were the visitors despite playing on their home field, took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh. But Caleb Stayton’s one-out, two-run double earned Elkhart Christian the win and left Prairie Heights with its first loss of the campaign.
Jared Beechy had the lone hit for the Panthers. Bo Murphy started on the mound for Heights, tossing five innings of shutout ball with three hits allowed, one walk and three strikeouts. Jacob Heller pitched the last 1.1 frames for the Panthers and suffered the loss.
Coach Nick Pfafman’s club got their bats going in the second game, slugging 18 hits in a 12-2 romp over the Eagles.
Corey Johnson went 4-4 with five RBI to lead Prairie Heights in the nightcap. Quinten Bland was 3-3 with a double and two RBI. Bobby Blum banged out three hits and drove in two, Beechy lined three safeties and scored twice, and Murphy socked a double and a single.
Getting the win in the second game was Johnson, who gave up a hit, walked three and whiffed five in five frames. Mike Gustin pitched the last frame.
Prairie Heights now stands 6-1 on the season.
