Dorothy J. Townsend,84, Sturgis, Mich., died Thursday, April 19, 2012 at Sturgis Hospital.
She was born February 9, 1928, in Detroit, Mich., to Fred and Alice (Nichols) Stites.
Moving from Adrian, Mich., to Sturgis, Mich., in 1964, her early life was spent in Detroit and she was a 1946 graduate of Thomas Cooley High School in Detroit, Mich. She continued her education at Eastern Michigan University and received a Bachelor’s degree in 1959 from Adrian College. She retired in 1992 from Sturgis Public Schools after 28 years of teaching fourth grade at Wall Elementary School. Prior to coming to Sturgis, she taught at Underwood School in Adrian, Mich., and in a one-room schoolhouse in Blissfield. She actively attended Community Bible Church in Sturgis and was a member of the Michigan Education Association, National Education Association, and Retired Teachers Association.
Surviving are three daughters, Wendy (Chris) Pangle, Howell, Mich., Alice Easterday, Sturgis, Mich., and Karyn Bagwell, Norfolk, Virg.; two sons, Mark (Pat) Townsend, Middlebury, and Kirk (Norma) Townsend, Three Rivers, Mich.; 10 grandchildren, Matt Townsend, Kevin (Wiline) Pangle, Abbie (Bob) Mathiak, Carrie (Dustan) Ingram, Katie (Daniel) Castro, Kristi Townsend, Sue Easterday, Shawn Bagwell, Shannon Bagwell and Tyler Townsend; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one grandson, Matthew Easterday, and one brother, Russell E. Stites.
Visitation is 12-3 and 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, at Hackman Family Funeral Homes Hackman Chapel in Sturgis, Mich.
Private family graveside services will take place at a later date with Pastor Steve Wisler officiating.
