Deer hunt planned at Olin Lake Nature Preserve

The Department of Natural Resources is planning a management deer hunt at Olin Lake Nature Preserve in LaGrange County. Olin Lake is located about six miles south of the LaGrange.

This special hunt will take place during the special antlerless deer season from Dec. 26, 2013 to Jan. 5, 2014. All regulations of the special antlerless season apply. The preserve will be closed to other visitors during the 11 days of the hunt.

Deer numbers continue to be excessively high at the nature preserve and over browsing by deer threatens the long-term health of the property. Deer have been especially damaging to white trilliums and other spring wildflowers.

The preserve is not being opened to hunting in general.

Ten hunters will be selected by drawing for the 11 days of the managed hunt that will take place on 116 acres of the 270-acre DNR property. Hunters can pick up an application for the drawing in one of two places.

·        Pigeon River Fish and Wildlife Area, 8310E 300N, Mongo, IN 46771, (260) 367-2164.
