Dean Mead, 80, died at his home Wednesday, April 25, 2012. He was born in Orland, IN on November 4, 1931, the child of Enos (Mike) and Agnes (Smith) Mead. At age five he went to live with his aunt and uncle, Ernest and Edna (Barton) Johnson on a farm near Brighton, IN where he graduated high school in 1950. He was a lifelong resident of the LaGrange area.
He was in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957 and a veteran of the Korean War where he served as a military policeman. He retired from Kirsch Company in Sturgis, MI in 1996 as Vice-President of Operations. He had forty-two years of service with the firm. For many years, he operated his own business, Mead Construction Company and built over twenty homes in the area.
He married Melody (Norton) Mead on February 25, 1989 in Knoxville, TN. He is survived by his wife; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jeffrey and Annie Mead of Austin, TX and James and Kelly Mead of Greenwood, IN; two daughters and a son-in-law, Brenda and Tom Mohill of Kalamazoo, MI and Debi Griffith of Howe, IN.
Also surviving are a step-daughter and son-in-law, LeeAnn (Johnsonbaugh) and Jeff Morrison of Wichita, KS; and a step-son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Deb Moon of Grand Rapids, MI. A step-son, James Johnsonbaugh, preceded him in death. Also surviving are eighteen grandchildren and twenty-three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm on Saturday, April 28, 2012 at the Frurip-May Funeral Home, 309 W. Michigan St., LaGrange, IN with a Memorial service immediately following. His son, Rev. Jeffrey Mead, will officiate the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Parkview Home Health and Hospice or the Parkinson’s Foundation.
