The unemployment percentage in LaGrange County continues to drop, falling below 5 percent in April, down 0.7 percent from March.
A year ago, the April 2013 unemployment rate stood at 6 percent.
LaGrange County saw a decrease of 125 in those listed as unemployed. However, of those off of the unemployment roll, 91 of those were from a decrease in the labor force. The state numbers showed an increase of 34 in the employment column.
LaGrange County continues to rank near the bottom of the state in unemployment, placing 84th out of the 92 counties. Surrounding counties have also seen a decrease in their unemployment, but still rank higher than LaGrange. Steuben County is ranked 47th with 5.4 percent, and Elkhart and Noble counties are ranked 58th and 59th, respectively, each with a 5.0 percent unemployment rate.
Statewide, the unemployment rate slipped to 5.7 percent, down from 5.9 percent in March. A year ago, the state unemployment rate was at 7.8 percent.
