LaGrange County saw one of its biggest increases in unemployment in January, reversing the mostly downward trend the area has enjoyed over the past year.
According to Indiana Workforce Development numbers released earlier this week, LaGrange County saw an unemployment rate of 8.8 percent in January, up from the 8.1 percent adjusted rate in December 2012.
The increased unemployment rate comes as the number of county residents listed as employed rose by 99. Those listed as unemployed rose by 117 since December 2012. Overall, the county saw its labor force rise in January by 216.
Statewide, Indiana saw an increase in the unemployment rate, up to 8.6 percent in January. The statewide rate in December 2012 was 8.3 percent.
LaGrange County is still well down the state rankings for unemployment at 70th. Neighboring counties all had higher unemployment rates, with Noble County at 10.4 percent, Elkhart County at 10.3 percent and Steuben County at 10.2 percent.
