County unemployment holds steady at 7.2 percent

LaGrangeCountysaw very little change in its unemployment rate for May. The rate announced last week by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development was 7.2 percent, up one-tenth of a percent from the revised April rate of 7.1 percent.

The numbers, though, showed some significant improvement in those listed as employed, with 301 added to the employed column. Only 36 additional people were listed as unemployed.

LaGrangeCounty continues to slide down the overall state list, being 60th on the county rankings for Indiana.

Statewide, the unemployment numbers were unchanged, staying at 7.9 percent (seasonally adjusted) in May.

In the region, Elkhart County continues to lead, with 8.7 percent unemployment. Steuben County is just behind Elkhart, with 8.5 percent, and Noble County a point behind them at 8.4 percent.
