LaGrange County’s unemployment rate has dropped nearly 2.5 percent in the past year.
In January 2013, the rate was at 7.7 percent, the best it had been in a while.
A year later, the county’s unemployment rate is at 5.3 percent, down 2.4 percent from the previous year.
The report for January released Monday morning by Indiana Workforce Development shows a revised December 2013 rate of 5.3 percent. There were only seven fewer listed as unemployed for January 2014 versus December 2013.
However, the report did show a drop of 163 in the labor force numbers, and 156 fewer listed as employed.
The overall rate puts LaGrange County near the bottom of Indiana’s 92 counties at 87th.
Statewide, the unemployment rate dropped to 6.4 percent, the lowest the state has seen since September 2008 when it was 6.3 percent.
Neighboring counties are still higher that LaGrange, with Steuben County at 6.9 percent, Noble at 6.5 and Elkhart at 6.2.
