County schools name top students

 

As the Class of 2012 looks forward to graduation later this spring, the three school districts in LaGrange County have named their top students.

Jared Berkey and Keenan Crotty have been named valedictorians for the Westview Jr.-Sr. High School Class of 2012.

Berkey is the son of Dennis and Connie Berkey of Topeka. He is an active member of the National Honor Society, student council, jazz band, marching band, Dynamic Singsations, Spanish Club, is the senior class president, and has participated in the school’s musicals, soccer, baseball and basketball. He is also a member of the Shore Youth Group.

Berkey plans to attend Goshen College and major in pre-med.

Crotty is the son of Jeff and Beki Crotty of Shipshewana. He is active in National Honor Society, Academic Super Bowl, and is a class officer. Crotty has participated in jazz band, marching band and concert band, along with the Dynamic Singsations, the school’s musicals, plays, community theater and International Thespian Society. He was also the variety show host.

Crotty plans to attend Indiana University-Bloomington and major in theater.

 The Prairie Heights Class of 2012 has named Donald Cook as its valedictorian and Zachary Smith as salutatorian.

Cook is the son of Jeff and Susan Cook of Stroh. He is involved in National Honor Society, Academic Super Bowl, German Club, German National Honor Society and the International Thespian Society. He was a member of the third place team at the state level for Tech Olympics, part of the International Thespian Society. Cook was recently named to the NECC All- Academic Team. He has also participated in cross country at Prairie Heights and is a member of the youth group at Stroh Church of Christ.

Cook plans to attend Purdue University to study engineering.

Smith is the son of Patrick and Janice Smith of Salem Center. He has been involved in concert band, National Honor Society, Academic Super Bowl, German Club, and German National Honor Society. Smith has also been active in theater. He is a three-time participant and recent recipient of the gold award at the ISSMA State Solo and Ensemble contest in Indianapolis.

Smith will be studying social studies education at Trine University in Angola.

LakelandHigh Schoolhas named two seniors as valedictorians for the Class of 2012 – Jalen King and Ben Slaven.

King is the son of Jeff and Maria King of LaGrange. He is a National Honor Society member and has been key member of the Lakeland High School’s boys basketball team. King is also active in the St. Joseph’s Church youth group.

King plans to attend college, majoring in pre-veterinary and playing basketball.

Slaven is the son of Audley and Joy Slaven. He plans to major in chemistry at Purdue University.
