Conservation officers investigate fall from tree stand at Pigeon River FWA

An Elkhart man was injured when he fell while removing a tree stand from Pigeon River Fish and Wildlife Area (FWA) in LaGrange County on Friday.

Mark J. Miller, 40, of Elkhart, was in Section I-1 removing a tree stand when the ladder to the stand bent, causing him to fall from the tree. Miller fell approximately 15 feet and injured his right ankle. He was able to call his wife who contacted Miller’s friend Travis S. Smith of Bristol, who knew the location of the tree stand.

Personnel from Pigeon River FWA, Indiana conservation officers, and fire personnel from Stroh and Mongo responded and were able to carry Miller through rough terrain to the nearest road.

Once at the road, Miller was treated by LaGrange county EMS and transported by private vehicle to the hospital.

The incident is under investigation.
