Commissioners approve wheel tax on mopeds

LaGrange County effectively approved a wheel tax on mopeds at their Monday morning meeting. The process for levying the tax requires the commissioners to recommend and the county council to enact the ordinance that places the tax on the books.

At Monday’s meeting the commissioners authorized county attorney Kurt Bachman to move ahead with creating an ordinance to attach a $10 wheel tax to any motor-driven cycle. The new state law that deals with the tax becomes effective and will take effect with licenses issued after January 1, 2015.

Both the recommendation and ordinance will be available for action at the joint meeting of the commissioners and council set for next Monday.

Cathy Wonderly was appointed to serve on the LaGrange County Regional Utility District Board of Directors. She will replace Bob Jarolim, who had acted as the treasurer of the board for the previous seven years.

Commissioners noted that after some delays the water line is going in the ground from Fawn River Crossing to Exo-S. This project is expected to be completed by June 10.

An agreement was signed with Nation Wide Title Clearing that will allow the firm to file documents with the LaGrange County Recorder electronically.

LaGrange County Assessor Pat Monroe told commissioners about a process that will change the assessed value of some rural businesses over the next four years. The county has gone to a new process of reassessment that will reassess one-fourth of the property in the county every year instead of an every four-year process.
