Churubusco girls edge Prairie Heights

Churubusco outscored Prairie Heights, 26-19 in the second half to pull out a 43-33 NECC girls basketball victory over the visiting Lady Panthers last Friday night.

Trailing by six (12-6) after one period, Prairie Heights knotted the score at 12-all on consecutive three-pointers by Shelby Fish and Liz German. Moments later, the Lady Panthers then took what would be their only lead of the contest on a deuce by Fish.

Churubusco rallied to net the final five markers of the second quarter to seize back the lead, 17-14. Stacia Fester, who led the Lady Eagles with 16 points, accounted for the final points of the opening half by canning a three-pointer.

Six straight points to open the third period boosted the Churubusco advantage to nine (23-14), but the Lady Panthers countered with an 8-0 run to close within one. Alexis German capped the rally with a pair of hoops.

But that would be as close as Prairie Heights would come to reclaiming the lead. After bumping the margin back up to five (27-22) by the end of the third stanza, the Lady Eagles swished 12-13 free throw tries over the final eight minutes to seal their first NECC triumph.

Cassidy Yant backed up Fester on the Churubusco scoresheet with 11 points.

Fish paced Prairie Heights with 15 points. Alexis German wound up with 10.

The loss dropped the Lady Panthers to 2-6 in league play and to 4-9 overall.
