Churubusco boys edge Lakeland

What looked like a potential sixth win for the Lakeland varsity boys basketball team last Friday night in Churubusco slipped away from the Lakers in the second half, as the host Eagles rallied for a 47-44 triumph.

A three-pointer by Tim Abbott and a bucket by Spencer Mortola put Lakeland ahead by seven (28-21) midway through the third quarter. But Churubusco would go on an 11-point run over the next five minutes to seize a 32-28 advantage early in the fourth stanza.

The Lakers fought back to take a 39-38 lead with 2:44 to play on a three-point play by Cody Richardson. The lead didn’t last long, however, as a deuce by Chris Jones and a clutch, three-point shot by Josh LeFever put the Eagles ahead to stay, 43-39.

Lakeland received one last chance to tie the game with less than a second left when the timer mistakenly started the clock without the ball being touched after a missed Churubusco field goal. But when the Laker inbounds pass sailed out of bounds the game, and the victory, belonged to the Eagles.

Tyler Arrowsmith tallied 15 points and Dylan Jones sank 12 to lead Churubusco. Jalen King topped the Lakers with 14 points, while Richardson finished with 13.

The loss left Lakeland 4-3 in the NECC and 5-10 overall.
