Central Noble boys down Westview

Central Noble ended 10 years of frustration in its boys basketball series with Westview Saturday night in Emma with a 57-51 victory over the Warriors.

The Cougars, who hadn’t beaten Westview in their previous 13 tries dating back to December of 2004, took control of the contest with a 17-9 run in the second quarter. A pair of three-pointers by E.J. Andrews and one each from Mason Smith and Brock Noe fueled the surge which earned the visitors a 28-20 halftime lead.

Central Noble still led by 10 (40-30) late in the third period when Lincoln McDonald came off the bench to give the Warriors a spark. The 5-11 junior canned a triple to cut the difference to seven. McDonald then swished another trey early in the fourth quarter to bring Westview to within four (42-38).

But that would be as close as the Warriors would get. Several costly turnovers, along with a 10-14 effort from the foul line by the Cougars thwarted any comeback hopes.

Jeremy Coney led a balanced Central Noble scoring attack with 13 points. Andrews and Noe both tallied 10 markers, and Smith wound up with nine.

The loss dampened another superior effort by Westview senior Chandler Aspy. The 6-3 forward canned 7-14 shots from the floor and went 11-12 from the charity stripe to finish with 25 points. Aspy also grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out four assists.

Andrew Yoder had five rebounds and four assists for the Warriors, who dropped to 0-2 in the NECC and to 1-3 overall with the setback.
