October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The public is invited to participate in a candlelight vigil honoring victims of domestic violence beginning at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 7, in the gazebo on the south steps of the LaGrange County Courthouse.
Elijah Haven Crisis Intervention Center of LaGrange is sponsoring this 16th annual observance. Names will be read and a candle will be lit for each fatality related to domestic violence in Indiana during 2012. Banners proclaiming the observance will be placed in LaGrange, Shipshewana and Topeka. Representatives from the LaGrange County Sheriff’s Department and Parkview LaGrange Hospital will participate in the event.
Elijah Haven also will host the second annual fundraiser dinner from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17, at the Shipshewana Event Center. Guest speaker at this year's event is April Maley, domestic violence survivor and author of the book Silent No More.
Domestic Violence Awareness Month evolved from the first Day of Unity sponsored by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence in order to connect battered women's advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and their children.
