Boys track sectional results

A year ago, Lakeland broke a long boys track sectional championship drought by winning the team title at Angola.

Tuesday night in Kendallville, it was Westview’s turn.

Powered by 1-2 finishes in three field events, two individual champions in running races and capped off by a victory in the 1600-meter relay, coach Paul Baker’s Warriors racked up 125 points to claim the program’s first sectional team crown in two decades. Lakeland was second with 111 points.

Senior Nate Raber and junior Trey Kennedy swept the top two positions in the pole vault, with Raber soaring 15-6 feet to surpass the sectional record of 14-8 which Kennedy set last year. Kennedy took second this time with a mark of 14-0.

Senior Parker Fought traveled a distance of 22-1 feet to win the long jump title by nine inches over sophomore teammate Bucky Carpenter. In the high jump, freshman Lindon McDonald cleared the bar at 6-3 feet to grab the blue ribbon. Placing second with a mark of 6-2 was Warrior senior Jarret Slabach.

Westview senior Nic Raber came from behind to nip Prairie Heights senior Dillon Henschen for top honors in the 400-meter dash. Raber crossed the finish line in a time of 52.05 seconds and Henschen stopped the clock at 52.19.

Micah Hunsberger, a junior for the Warriors, held off Lakeland junior Joseph Trost to take first in the 800-meter run. Hunsberger completed the distance in 2:01.07, while Trost finished in 2:03.04.

The foursome of Hunsberger, Nic Raber and McDonald linked up with senior Max Laughlin to win the 1600-meter relay in a clocking of 3:31.04. Second in a time of 3:33.47 was the Lakeland quartet of senior Mitch Herber and juniors Brian Raatz, Joel Miller and Trost.

Two more Lakeland juniors – Evan Garretson and Wyatt Petty, finished 1-2 in the shot put with heaves of 53-2 and 47-11 feet, respectively. Earlier in the meet, Garretson unleashed a toss of 167-10 feet to win the discus competition.

Prairie Heights hurdlers Zach Shepard and David Rodriguez each brought home blue ribbons. Shepard, a junior, won the 110-meter high hurdle race in a time of 15.23. Rodriguez, a sophomore, took first in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles with a mark of 41.20.

The top four finishers in each of the 16 sectional events earned bids to the IHSAA regional meet to be held this Thursday at Wayne High School, located on the south side of Fort Wayne.
