Boys NECC track results

Lakeland rolled to the NECC boys track championship last Friday night at Fairfield.

Coach Keith Thompson’s Lakers racked up 144 points in the meet, easily besting runner-up Churubusco (111). West Noble was a close third with 110.

Lakeland won seven of the 16 events and placed second in three others. Evan Garretson led the Laker list of champions with victories in the discus (166-8) and shot put (56-7.5). Garretson’s toss in the shot put broke the previous NECC mark of 56-2.5 set last year by Churubusco’s Austin McClure.

Nick Byler dashed his way to the 400-meter title in a time of 51.65, Tanner Oakley took the high jump with a leap of 6-1 and Taylor Raatz won the 300-meter hurdles in a clocking of 41.46. Raatz also combined with Eli Wallace, Dustin Cunningham and Joel Miller to claim the 400-meter relay blue ribbon in a time of 44.61.

Earlier in the week, the Laker foursome of Byler, Eric Herber, Michael Theis and Joseph Trost linked up to win the 3200-meter relay in a mark of 8:08.91.

Scoring runner-up points for Lakeland were Herber in the 800 meters (2:03.77), Wyatt Petty in the shot put (48-0.5) and the 1600-meter relay quartet of Byler, Theis, Herber and Miller (3:29.61).

Trey Kennedy’s win in the pole vault in the preliminary round last Tuesday turned out to be the best finish for Westview. Second-place finishes by Mitch Perkins in the 1600-meter (4:32.68) and 3200-meter (9:59.92) races led Prairie Heights.
