LaGrange County Clerk Beverly Elliott has resigned from her office, effective Friday, March 30.
Deputy Clerk Peggy Iddings was named as interim clerk on Monday.
LaGrange County Republican Chairman Bob Murphy has 30 days to call a party caucus to elect a replacement for Elliott.
Two Republicans filed to run on the May 8 Primary ballot – Bonnie Brown and June Brown. The party nominee from that ballot will face Democrat candidate Suellyn Mickem in the fall.
It has been indicated that Elliott’s resignation may be part of a possible plea agreement stemming from four counts of official misconduct.
Elliott was charged in July last year, following an Indiana State Board of Accounts audit. At the end of June 2011, the State Board of Accounts released a report of an audit detailing activity covering Jan. 1, 2010 to Feb. 28, 2011.
At that time, Elliott was asked to repay $18,386.88 that included $8,593.75 for the cost of the audit.
In all, Elliott was asked to repay $23,253.31, and according to the report, had made a payment to one account of $4,866.43.
Issues were noted with a dormant account with the clerk’s office, as well as discrepancies with receipts and credit card payment reimbursements.
The audit also found an overpayment to a trust fund account in December 2009.
