April library events

Many fun, educational activities for all ages happen at the LaGrange County Public Library and its branches each month. Here is a list of those events happening in April. Find the Bunny…

Children are invited to look for a picture of a bunny during library hours April 1-30 in the Children's Department at the LaGrange County Public Library. When they find it, they can bring the picture to the Children's Librarian or the front desk to receive a prize. Limit one bunny per day per child.

Genealogy assistance…

Volunteers are available in the Genealogy Department at the LaGrange County Public Library to assist the public with family history questions and challenges.

Volunteers from the LaGrange County Genealogical Society are available every Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

Volunteers from the LaGrange County DAR will be available on the second Tuesday of each month from 1-5 p.m.

Ask a Computer Tutor!...

Looking for help with a computer question? Make a reservation to ask a librarian! Call 260-463-2841 ext. 1030, tell staff your question, and sign up for a 20-minute appointment. They will do their best to answer the question, teach a new skill, or find the information needed. Appointments are available on the following dates:

·         Thursday, April 2, in the afternoon at the Topeka Branch Library.

·         Thursday, April 9, in the afternoon at the Shipshewana Branch Library.

Reservations are required at least one week in advance, in case time is needed to research a question. Call 260-463-2841 ext. 1030 and talk to Amanda to reserve a slot.

Pompom painting…

This event will be held Thursday, April 2, at 3 p.m. in the Topeka Branch Library.

Ocean in a Bottle…

Combine some cool ingredients to create an Ocean in a Bottle beginning at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 2, at the Shipshewana Branch Library.

Boater Education Class…

A Boater Education Class will be held at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 4, at the Topeka Branch Library.

Indiana Boater Education courses will provide instruction in general information concerning boats and maintenance, what to do in emergencies, how to make a boating experience safe and enjoyable, and the laws pertaining to watercraft operation.

Storytime Class…

LaGrange Storytime will be held at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Tuesdays, April 7, 14, 21 and 28 at the LaGrange County Public Library.

Topeka Storytime will be on Tuesdays, April 7, 14, 21 and 28, at 3 p.m.

After the class finishes up the alphabet this month, children will begin learning colors through stories, songs, dance and crafts.

Homeschool Group…

Homeschool Group will meet at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 7, at the Shipshewana Branch Library.

The book will be Easter in the Garden by Pamela Kennedy and participants will be making a pompom Easter egg painting.

Block Party…

A Block Party will be held from 2-3 p.m. on Tuesdays, April 7, 14 and 21, at the LaGrange County Public Library. They will be led by Ann Fremion of the Purdue Extension Office.

Building blocks can build a bond between a parent and child. Learn about ways to learn and have fun together at each Block Party.

Retirement workshop…

A retirement workshop will be held on Tuesday, April 7, at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. at the LaGrange County Public Library.

Join library staff for an interesting and educational workshop based on the bestseller Retirement You Can’t Outlive. This is a free hour-long workshop and everyone will receive a free copy of the book.

The purpose of this workshop is to provide people with valuable information that they can use to plot their course to a comfortable and secure retirement, give strategies to safeguard retirement against market loss while still earning great interest and learn how to eliminate the fear of outliving retirement money.

Coloring time...

Colorwith Me! will be held Wednesday, April 8, at 10 a.m. at the LaGrange County Public Library.

This is an opportunity for parents to enjoy quality time together with their child. The library will provide crayons, chalk, markers, paper and more.

LEGO Club…

Topeka LEGO Club will meet at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 8, at the Topeka Branch Library.

Shipshewana LEGO Club will meet at 3 p.m. on Thursday, April 16, at the Shipshewana Branch Library.

LaGrange LEGO Club will meet from 2-3:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 18, at the LaGrange Count Public Library.

Milk Explosion Art…

Come make Milk Explosion Art beginning at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 9, at the Shipshewana Branch Library.

Milk is good for you...and fun, too! At this event, participants will add food coloring to milk, use a little soap and make the colors explode!

LaGrange movie night…

Family Movie Night is 6 p.m. on Friday, April 10, at the LaGrange County Public Library.

The classic family favorite “Annie” is new again! In this movie with a modern twist, a foster kid who lives with her mean foster mom sees her life change when business tycoon and New York mayoral candidate Will Stacks makes a thinly-veiled campaign move and takes her in.

This movie is rated PG and runs 118 minutes.

Topeka movie night…

Topeka Family Movie Night will be Friday, April 10, at 6 p.m. at the Topeka Branch Library.

Kick back and start the weekend off with a great family movie! In “Big Hero 6,” plus-sized inflatable robot Baymax and prodigy Hiro Hamada team up with a group of friends to form a band of high-tech heroes.

This movie is rated PG and runs 102 minutes.

Second Saturday Book Club…

The Second Saturday Book Club will meet at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 11, at the LaGrange County Public Library.

This month they will be discussing The Jungle by James Upton Sinclair, a devastating novel about immigrant workers in Chicago’s meat-packing industry, which aroused public outrage, and resulted in federal legislation such as the Pure Food and Drug Act.

Copies of the current book selection are available at the LaGrange Adult Services Desk.

Henna tattoo…

Learn how to make a henna tattoo at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 11, at the Topeka Branch Library, or Tuesday, April 14, at 5 p.m. at the LaGrange County Public Library.

Henna tattoos are fun, temporary body decorations.

Make a bookmark…

Come celebrate National Library Week with a fun craft Monday, April 13, through Saturday, April 18, during business hours at the LaGrange County Public Library.

Stop by the Children's Department to make a bookmark. There will be plenty of supplies to choose from, so be creative!

Rainy Day Umbrella Craft…

April showers bring...a rainy day umbrella craft at 3 p.m. on Thursday, April 16, at the Topeka Branch Library.

Hunter Education classes…

Hunter Education classes will be held from 4-9 p.m. on Friday, April 17, and at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 18, at the Topeka Branch Library.

Indiana Hunter Education courses provide instruction in safe firearm use and handling while hunting, as well as in the home, hunter ethics and responsibility, game identification, and conservation management.

Anyone born after December 31, 1986 is required to be certified in Hunter Education before they can purchase a hunting license.

Stained glass craft…

Earth Day is April 22 and the library will celebrate by making stained glass globes out of tissue paper beginning at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 23, at the Shipshewana Branch Library.

Tween Club games…

You've seen “Minute to Win It” games on TV, now try them for yourself beginning at 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 23, at the Topeka Branch Library.

When can you yell in the library? Only when you're playing BINGO. Here's a chance for all 10-14 year olds to win prizes from 3:30-4:30 p.m. on Friday, April 24, at the LaGrange County Public Library.

Galaxy Slime…

The library is honoring National Space Day by offering kids the opportunity to get their hands dirty beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, at the Topeka Branch Library.

Galaxy slime is a simple to make an out-of-this-world fun to play with.

First Flowers Walk…

A First Flowers Walk will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, at Delt Church Park. Bring a camera and flower field guide if possible.

The park is located at 6455S 200W in Wolcottville.

Their growing season is very short. Their reproductive opportunity is even shorter. Get into the woods when the first session of flowers is at their peak. The First Flowers Walk is part of the Delt Church Park Trail Grand Opening festivities.

Pot of gold craft…

There will be a Rainbow Chain Pot of Gold Craft at 3 p.m. on Thursday, April 30, at the Topeka Branch Library

Tinfoil art…

Come make a tinfoil art craft at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 30, at the Shipshewana Branch Library.

Tin foil is handy for so much more than just keeping food fresh.

Game Night…

Game Night will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 30, at the LaGrange County Public Library.
