Albert “Burl” Nelson, D.D.S., 96, LaGrange, died Friday, February 7, 2014 at Life Care Center of LaGrange.
He was born May 16, 1917, in Shipshewana, to Joseph E. and Amanda (Mishler) Nelson.
Living all his life in LaGrange County, he attended Goshen College and graduated from Indiana University School of Dentistry. He practiced dentistry from 1940-1987 in LaGrange. He was a World War II veteran, earning the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy with the 20thU.S. Navy Construction Battalion (SEABEES) in Okinawa. He was a member of the LaGrange First United Methodist Church, a life member of LaGrange American Legion Post 215, a former member of the LaGrange Rotary Club, and a former LaGrange High School board member.
He was married November 28, 1940, in New York, to Grace M. Murray. She survives.
Also surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Thomas Helmkamp, LaGrange; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Craig and Linda Nelson, Ft. Wayne, Ind., and Roger and Leslie Nelson, Indianapolis, Ind.; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his stepmother, Irma Eash, and three brothers, Vinton, Gary and Kay O. Nelson.
Funeral services were held Monday, February 10, at LaGrange First United Methodist Church with Reverend Chris Danielson officiating.
Burial is in Greenwood Cemetery, LaGrange.
