Middlebury Schools joins in filing lawsuit for equal funding

Attorneys for Middlebury Community Schools (MCS), Hamilton Southeastern Schools (HSE) in Fishers, and Franklin Township Community School Corporation (FTCSC) filed a lawsuit on Feb. 23 in Hamilton Superior Court #1, Noblesville, Ind., alleging Indiana’s school funding formula lacks uniformity, is unconstitutional, and negatively affects schools with growing enrollments.

Middlebury School Summer Band program needs to be ‘self-funded’

A request for two summer programs at Middlebury Schools was split, based on funding issues. The Middlebury School Board voted Tuesday afternoon to approve the Jump Start summer program for grades K-11, but turned down the request for a summer band program.

Northridge takes first, third at Regional Science Olympiad

Sarah Toews of Northridge High School received a $1,000 scholarship to Goshen College as the high school senior with the highest number of medal points at the regional competition.

Tax phase-in for Jayco expansion approved

At their meeting Monday evening, the Middlebury Town Council approved the requested tax phase-in for an expansion at the Middlebury Jayco facility.
Jayco had made the request in January, stating that they were expanding Plant #41 as they move toward increasing production on Class A motorhomes. The motorhome production line was moved to Middlebury from Wakarusa.

New troop selling cookies

Girl Scout Troop #10069 at Heritage Intermediate School is participating in their first Girl Scout Cookie Sale. The troop formed recently at the school for girls in grades 4 and 5. The troop will be at Hardings in Middlebury this Saturday from noon to 4 p.m.

Lt. Governor Skillman to speak at Chamber annual dinner

The Middlebury Chamber of Commerce will hold its 7th Annual Chamber Dinner on Thursday, March 25, at the Das Dutchman Essenhaus Conference Center on US 20 in Middlebury. Doors will open at 5:45 for Social Hour and dinner will be served at 6:30 pm. The guest speaker will be Lieutenant Governor Becky Skillman.

First Annual Northridge Choral Invitational

Northridge High School will play host to a state and nationwide show choir and concert choir contest. The invitational will be on Feb. 27, with performances all day in the Northridge High School Auditorium.

Middlebury Schools go to Rainy Day funds as cuts loom

The Middlebury School Board approved a recommendation to transfer $682,500 from its Rainy Day Fund to help pay general fund expenses. The draw from the Rainy Day Fund was to “offset some cuts we’ve been hit with,” Superintendent Jim Conner stated.

Jayco products receive green certification from independent agency

Jayco’s Jay Flight and Starcraft Autumn Ridge travel trailers have been “green certified” by TRA Certification, Inc., an internationally accredited certification organization. The travel trailers were awarded a Gold Level Performance Rating, making Jayco and Starcraft among the first RV manufacturers recognized for building products with green manufacturing processes and materials.

York Elementary Mustang Award winners 

York Elementary has named its January Mustang Award winners. This award is given to the boy or girl in each classroom who has displayed exemplary academic effort and exemplary behavior.
